The title of this piece might imply destruction or a mess, but in fact rivers that are able to flow out into their floodplains during a flood are resilient systems. This can be explained in part by physics – the power of flowing water is a function of its depth and slope. When a river spills into its floodplain, the depth of the water in the channel is not much deeper than the channel itself, and so the stream power is not greatly increased during a flood. Compare this to a river that has incised, or eroded into its bed, and unable to dissipate the power of the flow in its now disconnected floodplain. In this scenario the water depth in the channel is greatly increased during a flood, and thus more powerful, erosive, and destructive. Not unlike a firehose. Allowing rivers space to create and access floodplains is not only good for the health of the river, but also good for maintaining resilient riverside communities.
