Amanita

$200.00

8 X 8 original acrylic painting on canvas

Whenever I see an Amanita I’m reminded of a hypothesis I heard about a northern species of Amanita being the source of modern Santa Claus mythology, and how reindeer are known to eat this mushroom and transform the toxins such that Siberian shaman’s use reindeer urine to induce psychedelic trance-like states.  The hypothesis is that the idea of flying reindeer and Santa’s red and white attire had their origins in the resulting hallucinations.  My understanding is that this is only speculation, and the modern Santa Claus myth of a jolly man in a red suit leading a team of flying reindeer can actually be traced to a New York poet in the 1800’s.  But every time I see one of these little glowing mushrooms, I imagine it dancing “Fantasia” style as a little psychedelic St. Nick.

Ships framed with a natural wood floater frame in a generously padded box. If you are local to Vermont you may also opt for “pickup” upon checkout at the Emile Gruppe Gallery in Jericho, VT.
