24 X 20 original acrylic painting on canvas
This is a scene from a little pond in my garden - a chaotic mix of shadows and reflections that somehow blend into a watery peace. I love seeing the aquatic visitors that show up to hang out with the goldfish who lives there in the warm months (the goldfish eats the mosquito larvae - I bring him inside for spa treatment in the winter). So, a few weeks ago when somebody in town was getting rid of a small pond liner, I eagerly took it off their hands to add another water feature to my garden. After installing it, I visited a local pond to find a few native plants to seed my new pond. I noticed there was a species of lily pad about ten feet off shore that seemed to prefer deeper water and I decided to wade out above my knees to investigate it. It was quite mucky and I felt something tickling my ankle. "Probably just bubbles", I said to myself, but that self-comforting thought exited my mind as quickly as it entered, for in the next moment the long ribbon of a ginormous leech swam between my knees and outstretched arms, and I said aloud, "Nope!", as I quickly high-tailed it for the shore. I mean, leeches are beautiful in their own way - they can be exquisitely patterned and colored and the undulating sine-wave of their swimming is hypnotic, but I guess I just prefer to admire them from a dry place. Next time I go seed-hunting I'll bring waders.
Ships framed with a natural wood floater frame in a generously padded box. If you are local to Vermont you may also opt for “pickup” upon checkout at the Emile Gruppe Gallery in Jericho, VT.
