24 X 30 original acrylic painting on gallery canvas painted continually around edges

I often take progress photos while I'm painting - sometimes to help me gauge my composition and values, but more-so to remind myself that everything starts from nothing, and the magic ingredients in bringing anything to fruition are curiosity and effort.  I started my professional life as a natural scientist, so I often find myself mulling-over my lifepath and the ways in which art and science intersect in the root of observation.  But the other intersection I often find myself contemplating is that of art and faith.  I'm drawn to painting not because it is relaxing - it's rarely that for me - but because it's challenging and I like to figure things out for myself.  For me, painting is freedom to explore and express myself but also to push myself to look closely and notice.  And in anything that is challenging, there are inevitably moments of self-doubt and frustration. In those moments I snap a photo and push-on, and trust I'll find my way, or at least learn something new.  Because I have realized that for me, self-trust is a form of faith.  Believing that I'll find my way even when I feel lost - that's a life-lesson I re-learn every time I pick up a paint brush.

Ships unframed in a generously padded box. If you are local to Vermont you may also opt for “pickup” upon checkout at the Emile Gruppe Gallery in Jericho, VT.
