A stream runs along the Haselton Trail on the Stowe side of Mt. Mansfield, and this yellow birch clings to a rock on a little cascade. I love the tenacity of yellow birch, seemingly able to grow out of the most acrobatically challenging environments. Their roots take on a tentacle quality, seeking out anchorage as they feel their way over rocks and downed logs for the feintest hint of soil.
