I’ve encountered this mossy outcrop on the side of Mt. Mansfield spring through fall and it is always ablaze in a splendor of color. When you hike the same place with some frequency you come to recognize particular features in personal way – a certain tree, a patch of moss, a special rock – they feel like friends you might stop in on from time to time to say hello. I’m often amazed at how in an environment that is often extreme, so many of these features persist and resist appreciable change, or at least change so slowly that I fail to perceive it.
